Home Arcade: Better Than MAME

Midway Stand Up Arcade Cabinet I’ve been building my own arcade cabinet on and off for the last 2 years… It looks ok and runs quite a few MAME titles. It’s also used as my media server for music, movies and photos. I think it maybe about to go out the window though. Big Electronic Games (bad name, I know) have released details of their new home based arcade cabinet, complete with 14″ monitor and a handful of Midway titles (Defender, Joust, Rampage etc). Target should be selling these units in November, so I might just get treated to an early chrimbo present if they look good. I couldn’t find any details regarding the processor, monitor, inputs etc, but BEG claim the unit has A/V for Xbox, PS2, DVD etc, so it’s worth a look.

Did I mention it’s just $500? When I’ve looked around Ebay and plenty of “pro” arcade builders, the price for anything close is around $1k, so even if I strip it down and use it as a base, I think it’ll be money well spent…

These are NOT the original arcade versions of these games, although “Big Electronic Games” is representing that they are indeed the ‘arcade versions’. This fact is glaringly obvious when playing Rampage & Tapper (these barely look better than the NES versions).

Some reviewers are blaming the poor graphics on the sub-par monitor, but this is not the case. The game sounds are pretty cheesy, too.

The only game that passes for the original arcade version is Robotron.

These games don’t look OR feel like the original games. Very disappointing, as I was looking forward to getting one of these. The games feel even less authentic than the remakes that you’ll find in those 20-in-1 joysticks.

Unless you’re buying this thing just for the diminutive arcade cabinet-shaped case and tiny monitor, beware.
