Marissa Mayer channels Google with new Yahoo homepage —

Yahoo-homepageHey, Yahoo — your Google is showing.

Marissa Mayer has been Yahoo’s CEO for less than a year, but the former Google exec is already leaving her mark on the Yahoo homepage, which is launching anew today.

The most immediately noticeable thing about the new page is its layout: It’s clean, simple, and deliberate — just like the current Google homepage that Mayer helped design.

But while the new page is clearly fueled by subtraction, it comes with a few major additions as well. Yahoo has added a “infinite news feed” to the page, giving users an unending, customized look at the information that they actually care about.

The customization goes further. The new Yahoo homepage allows users to turn off certain homepage items, which means that, if you don’t like “horoscopes” or “Dating” on your Yahoo, you don’t have to see them. (Mayer says that the new Yahoo homepage is “all about your interests and preferences.” Thank goodness for that.)

In all, the new page is a clear and much-needed improvement over the cluttered Yahoo homepage that for so long acted as an metaphor for how far Yahoo had fallen. Marissa Mayer may be the best thing that’s ever happened to Yahoo — and its visitors.
