We’re delighted to announce HealthBeat, a new conference that showcases how technology is transforming healthcare.

HealthBeat takes place on May 20 – 21, 2013 at the Grand Hyatt in downtown San Francisco.

This is the first event to have a singular focus on how information technology (IT) is driving out inefficiencies in healthcare.

The event will cover the most interesting and disruptive IT themes in healthcare: like how nurses and physicians are using iPads to do things like call up a patient’s health record and manage care, to how hospitals, other providers, and insurers are using the cloud to collaborate with patients and each other, to how big data is helping the entire ecosystem identify ways to provide better care.

The event is for healthcare business executives (hospital CIOs, leading physicians, insurers), who want to stay on top of these latest technologies, so that they can make better decisions.

HealthBeat’s tagline is “Smart Hospitals. Smart Patients.”

Hospitals generate $1 billion in waste annually, according to some estimates. However, hospitals make up only a small percentage of the number of  providers out there. So we’re including Smart Practices in our focus too.

The event is true to the heritage of VentureBeat. We pride ourselves on covering “the first mile,” or the the incredibly innovative companies that are just emerging and are the most disruptive. Some more mature technology players, too, including Microsoft and Qualcomm, also are having significant impact, so we’ll hear from some of their most interesting healthcare customers too. Venture capital investment in healthcare continues to soar, at 43 percent year over year.

The drivers of change are significant. All players in the US healthcare ecosystem are facing massive pressure as health reform rolls out: The mandate to move to digital records (barely half of all hospitals have completed this), along with things like Meaningful Use, alternative delivery strategies, and Shared Risk are motivating providers to adopt a host of new technologies, from wirelessly equipped labs to cloud-connected devices.
