Wired Magazine: Sucky. Wired Website: Kickass
I’m getting old. Or maybe I’m getting younger. One of the staple intakes of my life has been Wired magazine. I think I’ve been a reader since ‘93 when it launched… I remember paying a fortune to have it shipped over to the UK for years, and only when I moved to the US could I take advantage of the $4.29 special subscriber offer reserved for yankees… I digress…. I’ve been having a real hard time reading the Print edition of Wired for the past few months - ever since the new Art Director took over. First they changed the size/format of the magazine - making it smaller and more, er magaziney shaped. But then some clever ass decided to funk around with all the artwork and make it almost impossible to read.
What was once my favorite magazine, and the thing that made me stop what I was doing so I could read it cover-to-cover is now piling up, along side all the other magazines (Esquire, ESPN, SI, B2B, Folio, Details and sundry other freebies) in a corner of my room.
But if you check out the wired website, it’s a different case altogether. The site is easy to read, has ads in all the right positions (no pop-ups etc) and is a dream… Oh boy, maybe I’m really turning into an Emedia dude, or just getting old. Maybe Wired is more for the Facebook generation than it is for old-school BBS guys like me. I miss Wired.
